Brief profile: With a robust academic foundation in quantitative methods, business models, and information technology applied to sustainability and climate change, I have built an extensive career dedicated to advancing solutions for the most pressing global challenges and issues facing humanity. My work is distinguished by its interdisciplinary approach, integrating state-of-the-art methodologies to analyse the impacts of climate change and sustainability practices on the performance of companies, organisations, and entire regions at both a local and global scale. My research is characterized by integrating big-data, prescriptive analytics, linear/no-linear mathematical models, game theory-based models, network equilibrium, complex heuristics/metaheuristics, information systems, business models, and internet technology to understand and model how climate change and the required balance of economic, environmental and social issues will impact society, and the performance of companies, organizations, cities, regions and nations.

My research and potential contributions as a research and project leader underscore my commitment to addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change to urban environments. By leveraging my interdisciplinary expertise in quantitative methods, supply chain management, green energy technologies, and Industry 5.0, I have developed a comprehensive approach that not only identifies the risks climate change poses to cities but also offers practical, scalable solutions. My work continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in urban climate resilience, ensuring that cities can thrive in the face of an uncertain climate future.

Currently, I hold the position of Professor at the University of Talca, Chile, and since June 2023, I have been an Academic Visitor at the prestigious London Business School (LBS). I am honoured to be recognised among the top 2% of the world’s most influential scientists, as ranked by Stanford University in 2023, with a Google Scholar H-index of 39 and a Scopus H-index of 32. My ongoing research is focused on developing a framework that redefines STEM, business, and economics to address and resolve the complex challenges posed by extreme environments to industry and society across cities, regions, and countries worldwide.

At LBS, my current work is centred on designing policies and strategies based on advanced mathematical models, supply chain analysis, and Industry 5.0. This research is dedicated to accelerating decarbonisation, particularly through the deployment of green hydrogen, renewable energy, and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, and their role in mitigating climate risks for cities and nations. Over the past decade, my research has primarily concentrated on developing and applying mathematical methods, artificial intelligence, and Industry 5.0 technologies to address the multifaceted challenges of climate change for businesses, cities, and countries. This research has contributed significantly to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with notable contributions to transitioning energy systems to low-carbon alternatives. My work has also explored the impacts of climate change on agriculture, foodsecurity, andmining, as well as integratedmodels to analyse the economic, employment, and productivity effects of pandemics and climate change.

As a leader in interdisciplinary research, I have successfully spearheaded numerous projects, utilising advanced quantitative techniques that combine mathematical models, computer science, and supply chain business models to tackle complex sustainability challenges and climate risks. I have published over 110 papers in leading journals and have collaborated with more than 15 esteemed institutions globally, alongside numerous researchers listed among the top 2% of the world’s scientists.

My editorial experience is equally extensive, having managed over 1,500 manuscripts as an editor and serving as an associate editor for over 10 journals, many with impact factors between 3.0 and 12.0. I have also been a guest editor for 15 special issues in leading journals. Recently, I was appointed Editor of the Springer Nature Climate Risks book series, affirming my leadership in the field. Additionally, I am the founding Editor of the "Operations Research, Operations Management and Decision Support for Sustainability" section of the Journal of Cleaner Production, where I oversaw the significant growth of this field for over a decade. During the first three years I was responsible for leading that field in this top one journal in the area of Sustainable Development and contribute to its growth, being today an area that receives more than 60% of the total manuscripts submitted. I have concluded my services in this journal after 10 years of work. n 2022, I was approached by Elsevier and the Chinese Academy of Sciences to spearhead a novel scientific journal initiative, Sustainable Operations and Computers. Continuing in this role as founding editor-in-chief, I am gratified to report that, within just three years, the journal has not only been indexed in Scopus but has also secured a place among the top 25 publications out of over 300 in the field of management science and operations research. This achievement serves as a testament to my unwavering commitment to excellence in all endeavors, with a particular focus on advancing sustainable practices and mitigating climate change.

My research and innovation efforts have earned significant international recognition, including being listed among the top 2% of the most influential scientists globally. Since 2022, I have served as an official nominator for the prestigious VinFuture Prize , following my appointment by Professor Sir Richard Henry Friend of the University of Cambridge. The highest category of the prize awards $3 million to its laureate. I have also recently been nominated by the Chilean government as an expert to participate in the IPCC AR7 in 2024.

Throughout my career, I have also collaborated closely with the public and private sectors to secure funding for research projects exceeding $15 million USD. As a member of the International Advisory Committee of CCD-Circula Brazil, I have contributed to a $10 million USD project over five years focused on the decarbonisation of cities and countries. In total, my research and technology transfer efforts across sectors such as gas, mining, telecommunications, and energy have resulted in verifiable projects with investments surpassing $250 million USD.

In addition to my research, I am deeply committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation of leaders in climate change and sustainability. I have extensive experience teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as in executive education programmes. Furthermore, I am frequently invited as a keynote speaker at international conferences, sharing my expertise with diverse audiences.

This long-standing commitment to advancing science and technology in the pursuit of sustainable solutions underpins my dedication to the international scientific community and my unwavering pursuit of excellence in research.
